The Jyuni-hitoe, a twelve-layered kimono,was a formal costume for women in the Heian era.
It is regarded to have originated in the Tang style costume from China, gradually developing, inspired by Japanese natural features as well in the Heian period.

The layerings of outerwear and lining, or the color schemes of upper layers and bottom layers,were called by the elegant name "KASANE",literally meaning layer.
The names of "KASANE" were mostly taken from the seasonal flowers beloved by court people.
